Executive Search

An executive search is also one of the most important events in the life of an organization. Recruiting, hiring, and evaluating a chief staff executive is a basic function of a Board of Directors. In fact, it may be the most important task a Board undertakes.

By definition, an executive departure means the organization is in transition.  TMC has had great success in finding executives that fit with association's needs while attending to it transition needs.   By the time the executive search begins the organization is clear about where it wants to go and what kind of staff leader it needs to get it there.  Our search consultants have served in the executive position so know what it takes to successful.  We know the joys, the challenges, and the pitfalls.  We work with you to find the right person for your job.

While executive searches may seem costly, hiring the wrong person to lead your organization can be a disaster - financially, politically, and strategically.  A bad hire sends a negative message to the organization's members and stakeholder community.

TMC's approach to executive search differs from others in the field and we believe that our customized approach provides the best outcome.

  • We have served as executive director and other association positions.
  • We take a whole-systems, process approach to our work and solicit input from multiple constituencies.
  • We focus on optimizing fit, that is, aligning the future CEO with the culture of the organization.
  • Our principals conduct the search, not associates or junior-level staff. We spend time with our clients.  We attend meetings and conferences, so we better understand their needs and their industry.
  • Our success is equated with the organization's success.  Therefore, we are very selective about which organizations we work.
  • We charge a flat fee to avoid an inherent conflict of interest resulting from a fee structure based on salary.
  • We continue to be involved with the incoming CEO as necessary to ensure the success of the organization.

Executive searches conducted by search professional typically produce a significantly better outcome for two important reasons.  First, the pool of candidates a well qualified search consultant recruits will be of a higher quality than those that come simply from posting an advertisement.  An active recruitment strategy that seeks candidates who aren't in the job market is critical.  Second, a search consultant brings a fresh perspective to the organization enabling the association to hire an executive who fits the job and the organization's culture.  You can teach skills, but if the cultural "fit" isn't there, the placement will marginal or even unsuccessful.  The risk is too high for most organizations.   (See Analysis of an Executive Search.)

TMC has been providing executive search services to our transition clients since our founding.  All of our executives happily remain in their jobs.  One executive director placed by TMC said,

"I have here for 5 1/2 years and I still love the job. We have finished in the black for the past 4 years and membership is at an all time high and member retention this year was 87%, so we must be doing something right."

This was an another excellent placement.  We hear similar things from our clients as well.  You can review their comments here.
