Marine Technology Society

Names New Executive Director

December 2007 -- The Marine Technology Society Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has selected a new executive director. Richard Lawson, CAE will come onboard at MTS headquarters in Columbia, Maryland, on January 7, 2008. The executive director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the society.

According to MTS President Bruce C. Gilman, P.E., Mr. Lawson was a standout choice from a strong field of candidates. "Rich's selection was a thorough, objective and professional process carried out by the Search Committee members, and I think all of us will be pleased with the results."

Mr. Lawson will come to MTS after serving eight years as the director of technology and career services for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, a professional scientific association with more than 13,000 members. Previously, Mr. Lawson was a technology and business consultant for six years in commercial and defense industries for Sytel, Inc., and Camber, Inc. Mr. Lawson began his professional career serving in a number of positions with First Virginia Bank. He earned a bachelor of business administration from Mary Washington College in 1989.

Mr. Lawson noted: "I'm tremendously excited to be joining MTS and I'm looking forward to supporting MTS in its mission, vision and values. The society's strategic plan charts a visionary and ambitious course for the organization, and I look forward to being part of the team that will help bring MTS up to the next level of success."

The Marine Technology Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit professional society comprising ocean engineers, technologists, policy makers and educators. Incorporated in 1963, it provides the ocean community with forums for the exchange of information and ideas through its peer-reviewed MTS Journal, conferences, newsletters and Web site (www.mtsociety.org <http://www.mtsociety.org/>).

A national search for the executive director was conducted through the services of Jackie Eder-Van Hook, MSOD, co-founder of Transition Management Consulting, Inc.  Interim executive management services were provided by Ed Brenner, CAE.

Dear Bob,

I cannot fully tell you how pleased we are with the services TMC provided to MTS during a very trying and critical period.

Ed Brenner was the perfect interim ED.  He fit in very well and quickly learned our culture and systems and also contributed his experience in professional society management to us.

Jackie was a pleasure to work with.  I have been through many executive search processes in my career and have never experienced such an organized, disciplined and methodical approach to candidate recruitment and selection.  The results speak for themselves.

Thank you all.

Kind regards,

Bruce C. Gilman, P.E.

President

Marine Technology Society
